New York City – 6 Day Itinerary

This past summer my husband and I celebrated our 8 year wedding anniversary in my favorite city. NEW YORK! This was the first big trip we’ve gone on with just the 2 of us since our honeymoon. It was AMAZING! Though we got a subway pass and got around primarily via public transportation, we still managed to walk a total of 46.2 miles in the 6 days we were there. We did A LOT of sightseeing, exploring, eating, shopping, and enjoying broadway shows. I can’t even wait to go back.

Did I mention NYC is my favorite city? This was my 4th time visiting. Each time beforehand was for dance as a teenager and after graduating college. After I got my degree I traveled there by myself for an internship (I still can’t believe my parents let me do that) and worked for a ballet company. I only lasted one month before I was missing my family, the mountains, and driving my own car to get around. Though I don’t live there anymore, my heart will always be in New York City.

We did a lot on this trip but I’ve compiled some of our top favorite moments from each day on our 6 day jam-packed fun anniversary getaway!

Here is a recap of our trip on my YouTube channel

Day 1 in New York City:

We flew into the city on a red-eye flight so day 1 was pretty lax since we were exhausted. We were so excited to be there but could barely keep our eyes open!

  • Checked into our hotel at Staybridge Suites in Times Square which was pretty nice and in a good central location. Our only complaint was the slow and few elevators.
  • Lunch in Bryant Park while watching “Broadway in the Park” – Disney themed! So fun. We grabbed lunch from whole foods across the street and enjoyed the beautiful park atmosphere.
  • Dessert at Magnolia Bakery. Favorite bakery that we visited 3 times this trip. Get the banana pudding!!
  • Live taping at Jimmy Fallon! Definitely one of the highlights of the week!

Day 2 in New York City:

  • One World Observatory, Oculus and 9/11 Memorial. No words. Everyone needs to experience this!
  • Lunch at Lombardi’s Pizza.
  • Shopping at the Amazon 4-star store.
  • Crème brûlée doughnut at the Doughnut Plant.
  • King Kong musical on broadway.
  • Dinner at Junior’s. They are known for their cheesecake but we were way too full to try it! Next time!

Day 3 in New York City:

  • Central Park Row Boats – we were first in line and had a blast on the water!
  • Belvedere Castle
  • American Museum of Natural History
  • Quick stop to Levain Bakery for a chocolate chip walnut cookie. To die for!
  • Matinee performance of Mean Girls on broadway. We laughed so hard. It was very well done.
  • Dinner and dessert at Serendipity. I’m obsessed with their frozen hot chocolate. Also, if you haven’t seen the movie Serendipity, go rent it now!
  • Dylan’s candy bar to pick up some goodies for our girls.
  • FREE Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty and city skyline at night. Both of us have been to the Statue of Liberty on separate trips so we didn’t feel the need to pay to do that tour again. We would highly recommend doing the Staten Island Ferry since it was free and runs every 20 minutes or so. It will get busy at night because that is a popular time to see the sunset behind the Statue of Liberty and city all lit up!
  • Dessert at Minus 10 ice cream. Our third dessert stop of the day…don’t judge 😉
You can’t see our oars but we paddled those row boats like champs!

Day 4 in New York City:

  • Manhattan Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
  • Ballet Class at Steps on Broadway – I was so nervous to take an advanced ballet class in the city but I did it and it was AMAZING!
  • Another stop at Levain Bakery
  • Shopping on 5th avenue – Nike store, Apple store, TJ Maxx (which was awesome!), Victoria’s Secret, etc…We mostly window shopped but it was really fun!
  • Trump Tower
  • Another stop at Magnolia Bakery 🙂
  • Chicago on Broadway
  • Dinner at Roxy’s

Day 5 in New York City:

  • Top of the Rock
  • FAO Schwarz toy store
  • Took another dance class at Broadway Dance Center, this time it was contemporary.
  • Street market shopping
  • Joe’s Pizza
  • Rock of Ages on Broadway – the most fun show we saw this trip!
  • Black Tap for dinner and a crazy shake

Day 6 in New York City – Heading Home:

  • Ditched our hotel breakfast for some Dunkin – we don’t have one of those where we live!
  • DŌ Cookie Dough – we were lucky enough to be there while they were filming press and got to meet the owner!
  • Washington Square Park
  • Chelsea Market
  • Walking the High Line – plants on top of an old overpass, pretty cool!
  • Last minute stop to some shops for goodies to bring home to our kids.
  • Caught a flight at 5:00 pm after a day of walking 6 miles! We were so ready to rest/relax and be back with our girls!

This trip to New York was one for the books! Definitely a memorable time together. Our middle child, Ivy keeps praying every night that she can go to New York. Someday baby girl we’ll take all of our girls to NYC!
